One of the birthstones for October, Opal has long been a mystic and enchanting stone. An early aboriginal legend tells that the birth of the opal took place when the creator of Earth came on a rainbow to bring
news of peace to all humans. The creator touched down in Australia, and where his foot landed, the stones in the ground became alive with the magnificent displays and sparkle of the rainbow. The gemstone has always held a mystical power - a different universe is seen in each opal, and you never get the same universe twice. Opals need to be worn - each stone contains 2 to 6 percent of water and requires the moisture to stay beautiful - but they are relativley soft stones, and require some care. An opal will not withstand abuse, and should be taken care of with thoughtfulness if set in a ring. A pendant or earrings are better choices for every-day wear because they do not get as much contact as a ring would.
